What does Lloyd Kaufman have to do with Lemmy Kilmister from legendary rock band Motorhead? We’re not sure either, so you’ll probably have to ask them yourselves

Better Off Dead is one of the greatest comedies of the ’80s, and a highlight is the running gag where the paperboy stalks our hero, Lane (John Cusack), in pursuit of the two dollars he owes the kid for delivery services. The whole thing is a riff on horror films of the era, and I particularly love the scene in the park, which has a John Carpenter The Fog / Christine vibe going on. Someone put all the paperboy scenes together in one handy YouTube vid for your viewing pleasure. It’s been a favourite around the RM offices.

Total Film as a neat little piece about seven horror films that deserved Oscars. Author Sam Ashurst makes some great arguments.

January 20, 2009, marked a day which will forever be etched in the minds of those who had the privilege of witnessing it. A significant part of American history transpired: Barack Obama became the first half-black man to be sworn in as President of the United States since Warren G. Harding. As a privileged, Jewish Yale graduate who grew up as a dirt-poor black boy, I was very excited for this momentous occasion. I was moved as Aretha Franklin, a once fiery soul singer of the 60’s, sang as only a now sweet, grandmotherly type could (and with a bedazzled hat to boot!). And who could forget the poetry? Oof! The fucking poetry. I thought Maya Angelou was bad enough. Where’d they dig up that broad? I’m happy she was able to reschedule her reading at Denny’s so she could speak at Barack’s inauguration. But back to Obama…I listened intently to the great orator, now President, as he spoke in-depth about the building and strengthening of our “Infrastructure” – whether it be roads and bridges or jobs and the American work force, harkening back to Roosevelt’s New Deal of the 1930’s. And, believe me, physical infrastructure is important and the digging of ditches might have been very useful 80 years ago, but are we really expecting these laid off computer nerds, biologists and economists to be toiling away on our roads and bridges?

Given that producer Michael Bay and director Marcus Nispel (the TCM remake) are behind the new Friday the 13th , the fact that the studio has marketed the hell out of the movie, and, of course, the staying power of Jason, I’m not surprised it hit its mark and made craploads of money (over 45 million, apparently). The Rue Morgue staff hit the advanced screening of the film on Wednesday and I’d say we were soundly meh on the whole thing.

Hotel 626 – I don’t know how I missed it, but the online horror game “ Hotel 626 ” was released sometime late last year (possibly Halloween) and received an FWA award for Site of the Month. It’s a live-action / CG first person pov game where you’re trapped in a haunted hotel and you have to solve a variety of puzzles as well as traverse mazes to escape
